We see a view of Bill's home town, Auchinleck, including the coal mine, and the narrator give us a description of the town “An overgrown mining village planted in the middle of the dairy farm of central Ayrshire” “On the main road from Glasgow to Dumfries”. We hear how Bill got a job when he was a boy as apprentice baker and the working hours left him free to explore the hills of Galloway on his bike.
