CHRISTMAS in BLAENAVON

12/12/04

The weather was dry and cold as we cycled out from Croesyceiliog at 15:00 on a Sunday. The ride took us through New Inn and then along the lanes to Glascoed. As we turned up Rumble Street toward Goytre, were greeted with a Christmassy sight of a tree covered with coloured lights. We then strolled along the lanes until we went past Goytre canal wharf. Just past here there was a narrow lane that went up to the Goose and Cuckoo pub. It was now dark, but our Lumicycle lamps blasted their way through the blackness. The road turned into a rough country track that would take us over the Garn Clochdy mountain. We cycled over the top and all was strangely calm on the top of the mountain. Our descent through the picturesque valley town of Blaenavon was to be a yuletide spectacle. The old Victorian houses were all decked out with traditional Christmas trees in their bay windows. The ride back to Pontypool was good and fast and before long, we were cycling past the new Tesco supermarket and onto the cycle track to arrive home at 19:00....30 miles.
