It was a fine day as I set off early in the morning and travelled up the M5 towards my destination for the day Longstaff Cycles. I was greeted by George Longstaff himself who showed me into his workshop past ..(?).. who was busy building, with meticulous attention to detail, a fully equipped touring bike complete with Tubus racks and Schmidt dynamo ! George had explained on the phone that he didnt have much work on the day of my visit but he seemed very busy to me, one minute he was brazing up a frame, the next minute working on a lathe! I had a guided tour of the workshop and an interesting chat with ..(?).. , the man who does some of filing and finishing of some of the half completed frames. After a cup of coffee we talked about frame building methods, tubing, lugs and of frame builders both modern and of yesteryear ! After saying goodbye I had a quick look at the new Longstaff sales showroom which is huge and crammed full of just about everything to do with bikes including loads of complete machines. I had a great day looking at some of the most complicated bike frames I have ever seen with braze-ons for just about every purpose and, of course, a chat with one of the Britains most foremost frame builders....George Longstaff.
