THE CLASSIC ORGANY

6/06/04

The day after my 44th birthday we met in Usk at 07:30. The weather had been good for the weekend and we were expecting some good sunshine that Sunday morning. We cycled out on the main road toward Llangwm. The sun shone down through a couple of rain showers and then we knew we were to have perfect weather for the rest of the day. The ride through those beautiful lanes in the early morning was magnificent and before long we had climbed up to Cobbler’s plain. There were no mountain views, as the misty haze covered the horizon. But that did not matter as we rode along the big dipper lane to the tiny village of Trellech Grange. This is the last stopping point before taking the secret road to the Organy Pool plateau, which is on top of the Wye valley that borders with England. This climb is quiet and narrow with no cars to be seen and after a few miles of pedaling we were there, the celestial Organy Pool. After a bite to eat we meandered along the lanes to Nine wells wood. After, we had a good ride on the rough track that takes it course through Cleddon Bog, an area that has been preserved for natural science. It was not long before we reached Trellech and then sped along the road to Llanishen, where dropped off this massive plateau toward the Usk valley. After briefly stopping to watch the gliders just outside Usk we went through Usk and had a fantastic ride on our ‘traditional’ route home via Prescoed, Coed-y-Paen and the Trehebert road. Croesyceiliog was made by lunchtime after an enjoyable morning out....44 miles.
