AROUND AND ABOUT USK - Andrew's New SKS 'Race Blades'
1/02/04I met Nick on that Sunday morning around 10.00 near Newbridge on Usk. I was sporting my new race blade mudguards. I have been searching for reliable light weight muck stoppers for years and these seemed a pretty good offering. We rode against the biting wind for a while; we came upon a road closed sign that led to Usk. The river had been in flood that week but unfortunately it had dried up a bit, so the road was accessible by cars. We carried on to Usk and then took the main road to Usk. There was a strong head wind for a few miles so we diverted up the Treherbert road to Croesyceiliog. I was pleased with my new guards they had kept the mud off so they did the job outstandingly well....25 miles.

Footnote:- Andrew's on-going search for the perfect sporting mudguard took a twist today when he turned up a pair of the new SKS 'Race Blades' ! He had mounted them on his blue aluminium 'winter bike' as a bit of an experiment before possibly putting them on his Mercian. After an initial chuckle at their strange appearance I had to admit that they did in fact look quite sporty but would they cut the mustard out on the road ? Andrew seemed to think they would ! So, off we went up the enchanted, wet and windy, Bulmore Road to give them a try out. I was riding my own 'winter bike' which didn't have any mudguards on at the time and as I rode through puddle after puddle my legs and back became covered in muddy spray-water. Not so Andrew, at the end of the ride he appeared to remain as dry as a bone! The 'Race Blades' had done their job. Now we can look forward to the Spring time when Andrew get's his Mercian out of hibernation complete with new mudguards !
