More Rough-Stuff in Mid-Wales 2007 - Day One

10/08/07

We were fortunate this year in being able to get a second camping trip in. This time the weather was good as we set off from Llanwrtyd Wells on a beautiful Friday evening. We cycled north to Abergwesyn along the tree-lined, flat, picturesque road that follows the river Irfon. Here a left turn was made up a forest track not dissimilar to the one we had taken a couple of months ago. I had spotted this route on the map and it just had to be checked out!, the road goes up in to the Tywi forest and then along the top of the Irfon valley. I was expecting dramatic views of the valley but unfortunately we were in deep forest, Nick pointed this out, saying something about one tree looks like another, but after climbing up the mountain and leveling out we were in a clearing with excellent views back down the valley. Darkness approached, so we lit our barbeques and set up our tents on a rocky clearing alongside the forest track. These small disposable barbeques are excellent for cooking on a mountain, unlike the small stoves they are not affected by the wind. That night we settled down to a feast of steak, burgers, shish-kebabs, onions, peppers, mushrooms and our own salad bar! Darkness is at around 21:00 at the start of August and as we looked down the valley we could see a torch shining in the trees near us. It is unusual to see anyone in the dark up here, but after a while the light faded. We could only assume it was somebody on the asphalt road deep in the valley below us! We hit the sack around 23:00 and I settled off to the finest sleep I have ever had under canvas!
