Rough-Stuff in Mid-Wales 2007 - Day One

Day 1 ~ Day 2 ~ Day 3

It was Friday afternoon at 15:00, this was the time set for our trip into the mountains of Mid Wales, however, our decision to go early in the year, to take advantage of the light evenings, seemed to have backfired on us! The weather was quite appalling, with heavy rain and more rain forecast. After our Mother made the decision for us, by flipping a coin, we travelled by car to the village of Llanwrtyd Wells. It had stopped raining and after getting the bikes ready we set off a bit apprehensively at 18:00 into the mountains. A few miles of cycling and were in the heart of the country, turning off the asphalt lane our route took us up an unmade forest track which would wind and climb its way up and over the Myndd Trawsnant mountain (517m). At the bottom of the climb disaster struck, my derailleur got caught in the spokes and bent completely. It looked like a curtailed trip was the only option! Nick looked doubtful on repairing it but we managed to make an emergency repair even though we were attacked by insects, it was a good thing we had brought our mosquito nets! Further up the road I hit a rock and had a puncture!, after that it was incident free on our long climb up the mountain. The rain held off but it had also brought all he tasty aromas of the country, We were certainly in an isolated part of Wales and it was great to out on the bike with all our camping gear! Time was getting on, Sundown was at 22.30 so Nick cycled off to look for a camping spot. He found a nice pitch overlooking the valley, it was just getting dark as we put the tents up, just in time as it started to drizzle. There was then an excellent feast of barbequed steak, chicken, burgers and kebabs, we must have been the best fed campers in mid Wales that night!
