ROUGH-STUFF RIDE OVER WENTWOOD
At last there was good weather! 18.00 was the time the Brothers left their meeting point outside Ashford Hall, Croesyceiliog. There was a time when our main ride of the week would have been on a Saturday evening. But those wonderful Summer rides, returning home with the lanes illuminated by our lamps, were a thing forgotten for the past six years. However, this evening we were to turn back time and head out on a different ride toward Newbridge-on-Usk and then to take the lane that mirrors the main Wales to Midlands road. The old Roman road was joined past Abernant and after dropping down to the A48 Chepstow road Caerlicken lane was taken, this narrow track rises steeply up to Kemeys Folly on the Wentwood forest plateau. A pleasant local couple informed us of the rough route across the remote wood. An isolated and a bit creepy house was passed and the track got really muddy here. After a while the main forest track that joined up with the asphalt road was taken. The lamps were lit and the descent to Usk was a fast one and here extra supplies were sourced from the Dillons shop. It was now 21:30 as we enjoyed a quick ride to Monkswood. My Hope light punched a good hole in the night, whilst Nick's Smart 2 watt was pretty useful in the dark. There is nothing quite like it, having the whole world of the lane in front of you lit up by your lamp! After Glascoed a sprint started and continued past Semen World farm. Unfortunately I punctured on Jerusalem lane. After fixing the punctur the ride was finished off along the old abandoned road from New Inn to Croesyceiliog....29 miles.
