WHITECASTLE FOR LUNCH

18.3.12

The weather promised to warm up as the brothers left Croesyceiliog at 09.00 on Sunday morning. We set off at a swinging pace through New Inn, Monkswood,Glascoed and to Usk, here we took on provisions and ate some breakfast of pork pies and pickle. Nick had bought some Victorian lemonade, like most things from that era, it looked and tasted disgusting. I left Nick to finish it off and dispose of the the bottle and I set off again at an unnatural pace, overtaking a gaggle of mountain-bikers before reaching Raglan. Here Nick caught up, cycling into a biting headwind was hard work. There were quite a lot of cyclists about, including a group who were cycling the Three Castles. The rough road to Whitecastle was quite dry and ridable, unlike a couple of months ago. In the castle the Sun warmed us up for a while as we ate lunch. The road back took us past Llanarth Asylum and then on to Croes-Llanfair, before long Goytre was passed through. On the road toward Glascoed my previous excursions had taken their toll. I desperately tried to take on rations to keep going, but I had a rough ride home, the memory of which is best left to sink into oblivion....45 miles.
